New Significant Clinical Results Quantifying Single Dose Rapid immune Activation for Symetrian™
Newly published results on rapid immune activation after consuming a single dose of Unigen’s Aloe-based nutraceutical composition
TACOMA, WASHINGTON & KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON – SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 : Significant clinical study results quantifying rapid immune activation by UP360 have been published by NIS Labs in collaboration with Unigen, Inc. UP360 is marketed under Unigen’s brand name Symetrian™. NIS Labs is a contract research organization (CRO) that provides clinical studies and lab assays that help clients support efficacy claims and differentiate their products from the competition.
NIS Labs conducted a controlled clinical study to measure rapid immune activating effects after consuming a single dose of UP360 compared to placebo.
[Consuming a single dose of the UP360 nutraceutical supplement triggered rapid changes to immune surveillance and alertness, as well as increased antioxidant protection in healthy people.]
UP360 is an Aloe-based nutraceutical composition formulated for healthy immune homeostasis. The composition also contains extracts from the Poria cocos mushroom and from rosemary. This is the first study to document the rapid immune activation that happens after consuming a single dose of UP360. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over clinical trial involving supplementation with UP360 provides evidence for a rapid mobilization of immune cells, specifically those cells that are involved in the immediate (“innate”) immune protection when encountering a pathogen.
“The UP360 nutraceutical formulation was studied using our unique and highly controlled study design for evaluating changes within the immune system within hours of consuming a single dose of a natural product,” says Dr. Gitte Jensen, founder and research director at NIS Labs. “Highly significant changes in immune activation and surveillance activity were documented starting at 1 hour, with downstream effects seen at 2 and 3 hours. These changes are rapid and transient, as the immune system returns to homeostasis.”
The results were published in PLoS One, “Rapid increase in immune surveillance and expression of NKT and γδT cell activation markers after consuming a nutraceutical supplement containing Aloe vera gel, extracts of Poria cocos and rosemary. A randomized placebo-controlled cross-over trial.” The trial involved 11 healthy participants, consuming UP360 on one clinic visit and placebo on the other clinic visit. On each visit, a period of rest was followed by a baseline blood draw and consuming a test product. Additional blood draws were performed at 1, 2, and 3 hours after consuming a product. The results showed rapid increases immune surveillance and alertness, increased levels of chemokines and the stem cell-mobilizing growth factor G-CSF, and increased enzymatic activity for the body’s own antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase.
Unigen Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Qi Jia, stated, “This study is pivotal in documenting that a single dose of UP360 supports and activates the natural defense of the immune system in protecting our body. The waves of immune activation through cytokine releases, in combination with the waves of immune cell migration, suggests a highly coordinated sequence of events after consuming UP360.” Dr. Jia explained that the initial wave is associated with release of chemokines, followed by immune cell activation. The third wave involves highly significant migration of natural killer cells, CD8+ T cells and γδ T cells, parts of our innate immune defense system. “Because we applied a study design that is able to capture these rapid events, we were able to demonstrate this unique effect of consuming UP360.”

The Company discovers its ingredients through its PhytoLogix® high-throughput screening approach applied to a proprietary well-annotated collection of botanicals and a legacy mining approach applied to botanicals having known medicinal benefits.
Mechanism of action, safety, and efficacy are documented with extensive preclinical in vitro and by human clinical studies. Unigen protects its discoveries with issued patents and patent filings in all major territories and manufactures its products to GMP standards. Unigen commercializes its proprietary ingredients through licensing and ingredient supply alliances with commercial partners engaged in the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of end-products in each of Unigen’s target markets.
About NIS Labs
NIS Labs (Natural Immune Systems, Inc.) is contract research organization, with locations in Port Dover, Ontario, Canada and Klamath Falls, Oregon, USA. The research activities at NIS Labs focus on natural products, using strategic research plans to conduct phases of research that are tailored to a client’s needs for science-backed marketing claims. We typically move from pre-clinical work into proof-of-concept clinical trials, followed by full clinical trials. Facilities include clinic rooms tailored for the exclusive needs of the acute cross-over studies, such as the study on UP360 described here, in combination with full immunology laboratories where freshly drawn blood samples are tested immediately using high-end methodology. A substantial proportion of NIS Labs’ studies are used for clients’ internal Research and Development as well as for patent-protection. A portion of studies, as in the case of this study, get published in peer-reviewed scientific literature.
